Introducing mangiamo! Serving really, really good wood fired pizza. It’s handmade in the traditional Neapolitan style and expertly mangia-fied especially for you!

But before we get carried away, let’s start at the beginning…

The story of those amazing pizzas at mangiamo begins in 1953, in the small Italian village of Chiaiamari, my family’s original home. You need really good eyes to find it on the map. My grandparents took the bold move of emigrating the family to the UK where the family of 9, soon found themselves in a tiny 2 bedroom house living off the very low income of my Nonno (grandfather) working the railroads. For my Nonna (grandmother), raising 7 children and ensuring everyone was well fed, was a constant challenge. Her philosophy was mi arrangio con quello che c’è (I make do with what I have). And she did. A meal created from scratch and with love; she was my inspiration and the origin of my passion.

Nonna Teresa, forever standing in front of her stove, was always cooking. Having such classically large Italian family, we were all in and out of her house to visit at all times of day. Whenever you did, hungry or not, there was no escape from being fixed a large (read: large) bowl of pasta and sauce from the ever present bubbling pot on the stove. Not that any of us needed persuasion, but if you stopped eating or slowed down for a second, you were really in for it. “Why you no eat? Mangia, mangia!” (eat, eat!) she’d yell in that passionate endearing way.

I was always a very curious little guy, hovering around my Nonna Teresa’s stereotypical big colourful skirts and loose hose, watching in awe as she squeezed such incredible, intoxicating smells and flavours from the simplest of ingredients. One of my earliest memories was sitting under the kitchen table eating a doorstop of a mortadella sandwich just watching her effortlessly make pasta with this natural matriarchic skill all the old school Italian mothers and grandmothers seemed to acquire.

As I grew, I began to see the kitchen for what it truly was – the backbone of the Italian family. I started to understand the weight of my heritage that cantered on food.  Mangiamo (to eat) is more than a name or phrase; it is simple, pure, and the philosophy of Italian eating. It is that moment when you are surrounded by your family with a home cooked meal that has had heart and soul poured into it. Bonding. Savouring. Enjoying.

I’ve always had a soft spot pizza (just like the rest of you lovely people), but wasn’t until one glorious summer I built a wood burning oven. It truly was love at first bake, and just got better from there. I left my old job behind and embarked on a quest share my passion for food on the streets. I wanted to bake pizza, but I wanted to be unique. After some soul searching in Naples, Rome, Chiaiamari and with the help of Matt and his excellent team, designs were drawn up to convert an old Italian icon – and a family favourite – the classic Fiat 500, into my new wood burning partner. I found the rusty old girl shortly after, and gave her a new lease of life. Christened after my inspiration, I welcome little Teresa into the family. And thus, mangiamo was born!

If Nonna Teresa taught me anything about food, it’s respect and passion. Respect your ingredients and their origins, know them, love them, give them the time they deserve and handle each with the greatest of care. Do this, and you can let them do the rest. After all, what is food without amore (love).

At mangiamo, we make those “really, really good” pizzas you’ve heard so much about, from Italy’s famous classics to innovative flavour combos. We only use the highest quality ingredients from Italy, together with seasonal & locally sourced fresh produce (of course), to bake you the best Neapolitan pizza outside of Naples. Take a look at some of the ingredients we use in our pizzas.

Harvested from the rich volcanic soils of Mount Vesuvius, their low acidity and sweet, rich flavour really make our pizza’s sing. They don’t call them the world’s best tomatoes for nothing.

Fior di Latte Mozzarella

The tempers of pizzaiolo’s all over Naples would be hotter than a wood fired oven for putting other than Fior di Latte Mozzarella used for their precious Margherita, and who needs to argue? This mozzarella is made from cow’s milk and gives a smooth, creamy flavour that works in perfect harmony with the rich San Marzano tomato base.

Anyone who’s experienced this thing of beauty know’s exactly what we’re about to say; it truly is the undisputed king of cheese. It’s higher fat content gives it a richer, more delicate flavour and a creamier mouth feel. The only way is fresh when Mozzarella di Bufala is concerned, so we get it shipped in weekly straight from Campania.

Shipped in from Naples, we only use Caputo “00” Grade Flour. Milled from the best wheat from around the world, this flour has been expertly ground ultra fine, which allows us to make our Neapolitan pizza that much more special.

Our beautiful Fiat 500 wood fired oven would make a fantastic centrepiece for your guests to admire at an informal outdoor evening reception, whilst enjoying some extremely tasty pizza from a menu uniquely tailored for you. We are also able to cater accomplements to your pizza, including salads, antipasti and fresh breads.
